The Grandfather Wall Clock – An Enduring Tradition

There are many reasons traditional wooden cabinet clocks with pendulums remain among the most popular clocks sold, and why people choose to hang their own grandfather-style clock on the wall. There’s something comforting about the traditional style, and they perfectly complement so many regional themes, from New England and old New York to San Francisco, as well as Southern Colonial. They remain an excellent accessory for offices and business spaces, giving whatever room they hang in a dignified, professional air, quietly saying you don’t compromise on quality.

Why a grandfather wall clock, and not a floor grandfather clock? Space considerations are the first and most obvious factor. Standing grandfather clocks require several feet of floor space that some rooms don’t have, and tend to dominate whatever room they are placed in. And while they’re perfect for a spacious entryway, they can easily overwhelm a smaller room and completely take over a condo. The smaller wall clock is far more versatile anywhere in the home, and the only choice for an office of less than unlimited space.

Another factor is price. A grandfather wall clock can cost considerably less than its standing cousin and yet has all of the charm. It’s a good choice for those who want a traditional clock but may not wish to save for or invest in the cost of buying and installing a full free-standing Grandfather clock. The savings only accumulate when it’s time to move, as standing grandfather clocks need to be moved and leveled professionally.

The modern grandfather wall clock has another distinct advantage. You can choose a quartz model that never needs winding, or go with the more traditional keywound style. While the latter may be perfect for the person who enjoys starting their week with the comforting routine of winding and setting their clock, a quartz clock runs without any fuss and is virtually trouble-free. Fine clock-makers still produce both quartz and keywound models. Look for clocks by Howard Miller, Bulova, Ridgeway, and Hermle, for a traditional style. Expect to pay $400 or more. You’re guaranteed a fine time piece, a beautiful accessory for home or office, and a clock that could well last generations.
